| As
of now, there is no known development plan to create a world class
Bird Sanctuary despite its potential to be perhaps the best birding
area globally. PROBLEMS:
- Illegal encroachments and construction in
the notified area
- Illegal Fishing
- Cattle grazing
- Poaching and Hunting
- Destruction of Habitat
- No management and administration of the
habitat – marshes, trees, reed beds etc
- Heavy Traffic on the Sanctuary (bund) road
ROOT CAUSES OF THE PROBLEMS:
- Multi-plicity of Authorities – Irrigation
Department of U.P. owns the land whereas Forest Department is
responsible for the Sanctuary.
- Lack of a Management and Development Plan
CONSEQUENCES:
- Continued Reduction in the Bird Population
from year to year.
- Continued Reduction
in the number of species seen at the Sanctuary – almost
50 species not seen since 1970
DEVELOPMENT PLAN OUTLINE & CONCEPT:
- Design a Plan for the development and maintenance
of the habitat
- Trees which attract birds need to be Planted
- Management of the Reed beds and wet area
such that the specific species of birds find a habitat and food
- Fence the whole OBP-WLS area
- Stop traffic flow, fishing, cattle grazing
etc in the area of the OBP-WLS
- Construct Watch-towers and Hides at appropriate
locations
- Construct more spurs into the area under
water
